Dilruba Temuçin, Pelin Şulha ve Gizem Yaren Kutlu'nun ünlü televizyon dizisi Young Sheldon'daki görsel-işitsel yemek çevirisi öğeleri üzerine, “Gastronomic Translations for young Sheldon: Reception of Culinary Concepts from the Perspectives of Dubbing and Subtitling” adıyla yaptığı bu çalışma, Teksas yemek kültürünün Türkçeye aktarılması konusunda ilgi çekici gözlemler içeriyor.
In Translation Studies, audiovisual translation is becoming more important because digital technology and globalization are constantly developing. Dubbing and subtitling are the main methods used to make media products accessible. This study examines both methods and evaluates how translation students understand them.
In the first part, selected episodes from the family comedy Young Sheldon and the subtitles and dubbed versions of food and cooking terms are analyzed, considering the genre features and Texan culture and cuisine from the 1980s and 1990s.
In the second part, a survey with students from Bursa Technical University and Manisa Celal Bayar University explores how they make their translation decisions. It helps them to see the differences between subtitling and dubbing, especially in terms of source and target cultures and audience expectations.
Overall, this study will be beneficial for researchers and students interested in the rapidly growing field of audiovisual translation.
