One of the most vibrant and debated topics within the science of balāgha (Arabic rhetoric) is istiʿāra (metaphor), which this book examines in depth through its historical development, theoretical framework, and literary exemplars. Covering the period from al-Jāḥiẓ to ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Jurjānī, it explores the nature, evolution, and contextual usages of istiʿāra, with particular focus on the classical rhetorical discussions surrounding of al-istiʿārah al-makniyah (implied metaphor).
