Ekümenik (genel) konsiller, dünyayı değiştiren ve Hıristiyanlığı biçimlendiren en önemli toplantılar arasında yer alır. Çünkü Hıristiyanlık, tarih sahnesine çıktığı andan itibaren dünyayı etkileyen bir din olmuş; bu konsiller de onun inanç esaslarını ve kilise düzenini belirlemiştir. 325'te toplanan İznik Konsili'nden başlayarak “ekümenik” konsil denilen toplantılar, Hıristiyanlığın nasıl geliştiğini adım adım izlememize yardımcı olan önemli dönüm noktalarıdır. Özellikle ilk bin yılda Doğu'da yapılan konsiller, Hıristiyanlığın temel inançlarının ve kilise yapısının şekillendiği başlıca toplantılar olmuştur. İlk bin yıldan sonra genel konsil geleneğini Katolik Kilisesi sürdürmüştür. Batı'da toplanan bu konsiller ise hem Avrupa tarihini hem de Batı Hıristiyanlığının gidişatını etkilemiştir. Bu konsiller Türkiye açısından da önemlidir; çünkü ilk sekiz konsil olarak anılan Doğu konsillerinin tamamı bu topraklarda gerçekleştirilmiştir. Her bir bölümü Dinler Tarihi uzmanları tarafından kaleme alınmış olan elinizdeki çalışma, genel konsillerle ilgili derli toplu bir kaynak sunma amacındadır. Kitap Ekümenik Konsil kavramını açıklayan bir giriş kısmının ardından kronolojik olarak her bir ekümenik konsili ele alan bölümlerden oluşmaktadır. İngilizce Ecumenical (general) councils are among the most important gatherings that changed the world and shaped Christianity. This is because Christianity, from the moment it appeared on the stage of history, has been a religion that influenced the world; and these councils determined its core beliefs and ecclesiastical order. Beginning with the Council of Nicaea convened in 325, the assemblies known as “ecumenical” councils are crucial turning points that help us trace, step by step, how Christianity developed. Especially during the first millennium, the councils held in the East were the principal meetings in which the fundamental doctrines and church structure of Christianity took shape. After the first millennium, the tradition of general councils was continued by the Catholic Church. Convened in the West, these councils influenced both European history and the course of Western Christianity. These councils are also significant for Türkiye, because all of the Eastern councils referred to as the first eight councils were held on these lands. Written by specialists in the History of Religions, the present volume aims to provide a well-organized and reliable resource on the general councils. Following an introductory section explaining the concept of the Ecumenical Council, the book consists of chapters that address each ecumenical council in chronological order.
