Özet John Stuart Mill'in ilk kez 1848'de yayımlanan bu eseri, Adam Smith ve David Ricardo'nun klasik iktisat kuramlarını sentezleyen ve bu kuramlara sosyal bir derinlik katan anıtsal bir çalışmadır. Mill distinguishes between the "laws of production," which he considers immutable physical truths, and the "laws of distribution," which he argues are subject to human institutions and social choice. The book covers a vast range of topics, including the nature of capital, the efficiency of labour, the influence of the progress of society on production and distribution, and the role of government in economic affairs. Mill's work is particularly noted for its early discussion on the "stationary state" and its cautious but sympathetic examination of socialist ideas. It remained the standard economics textbook in the English-speaking world for decades, bridging the gap between classical and neoclassical thought.
