Abstract This compelling novella follows an extraordinary encounter on a cruise ship traveling from New York to Buenos Aires between the world chess champion, Mirko Czentovic, and the mysterious Dr. B. During his solitary confinement by the Nazis in Vienna, Dr. B. survived the psychological torture of isolation by obsessively playing out thousands of chess games from a stolen manual in his mind. While this developed his genius to an elite level, it also led to a mental breakdown known as "chess poisoning." As he confronts Czentovic's arrogance during the voyage, Dr. B. is forced to face his past trauma on the chessboard. Zweig's masterpiece is a profound exploration of human psychology, the devastating impact of totalitarianism on the individual, and the tragic nature of mental obsession.
