Özet John Dewey'nin bu eseri, okulun, çocuğun ve daha geniş sosyal topluluğun arasındaki temel ilişkiyi inceleyen ilerici eğitimin (progressive education) kurucu metinlerinden biridir. Dewey'nin Chicago Üniversitesi Laboratuvar Okulları'ndaki deneyimlerine dayanan çalışma, eğitimin sadece gelecek yaşama bir hazırlık değil, yaşamın kendisi olan sürekli bir süreç olması gerektiğini savunur. Abstract "The School and Society" by John Dewey is a foundational text in progressive education that explores the essential relationship between the school, the child, and the broader social community. Based on Dewey's experiences at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, the work argues that education should not be a mere preparation for future living, but a continuous process of living itself. Dewey critiques the traditional, passive model of schooling and advocates for a student-centered approach where "learning by doing" becomes the primary method. He emphasizes the integration of manual training, such as weaving and carpentry, to connect academic knowledge with social progress and industrial history. The book highlights how schools can function as miniature communities to foster democratic values, cooperative spirit, and the holistic development of the child's character and intellect.
